Fans have been calling out Elizabeth Olsen’s lack of an accent in the most recent Avengers film, saying it’s distracting and hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Well, director Joe Russo has a response for those people. “We have intentionally tried to strip that accent away for a couple of reasons,” the director shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “One is, you’ll notice at the beginning of [Captain America:] Civil War, that Black Widow is training her how to be a spy. And two, she has now been on the run and one of the most distinguishing characteristics that she has is how she speaks. So if you’re gonna try to disguise yourself, or hide yourself, or not be caught, you’re going to try to limit those trigger warnings that would make it easy for someone to identify you, which would be inclusive of her accent.”

In a nutshell, Olsen’s character is trying to make herself as indistinguishable as possible. She needs to keep hiding and can only do so by changing prominent features; one of which is the accent.
As a rebuttal, audiences have attested that you can’t simply turn an accent off; it takes years to lose an accent. However, as pointed out by a number of Avengers fans, Scarlet Witch has the power to alter reality. Simply put, she’s capable of bending the rules.
Avengers: Infinity War is out in theaters now.
