Republican Senator Makes Tone-Deaf, Racist Comment And People Are Furious

The United States of America is proudly and rightfully known as a “melting pot.” That means it’s one country formed from the cultures and citizens of so many others. Nobody is really from here (except for Native Americans), because everybody or their ancestors had to come here from somewhere else. It’s nice. It’s great. It makes it a very large, rich, and culturally diverse country.

And that is what’s destroying America, according to Iowa Republican congressman Steve King.

On Friday, King tweeted a link to a news story that quoted far-right, anti-immigration, anti-“mixing” Hungarian prime minister Victor Orban.

Diversity is not out strength. Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban, “Mixing cultures will not lead to a higher quality of life but a lower one.”

Yeah, being anti “mixing cultures” to protect the purity of something? Where have we heard that before? Oh, only every genocidal monster in history. Perhaps King realized that his words would be taken a certain away, so he clarified them with a follow-up tweet:

Assimilation has become a dirty word to the multiculturalist Left. Assimilation, not diversity, is our American strength.

Ah, so he’s not racist you guys, he just thinks there should be one singular bland American monoculture and no diversity whatsoever. So then same message, different words.

That’s a lot of vitriol delivered with with a definitive rage outmatched only by King’s critics on Twitter, who know a lot more history than he does.

Fuck you.

Steve, you’re out of your element- & apparently you have no handle on American history.

Racism & Xenophobia are not strengths.

Resign, bigot.

Okay, well then.. never play Rock & Roll again

Or it’s derivatives.. country, folk, blues, gospel, jazz, R&B

you know what.. y’all can have Line Dancing

Stop eating our food

No more Chinese take out, pizza, spaghetti

OOH! No more guns

The Chinese invented gun powder

Hungary seems to be calling for you. Move there and never come back please.

Diversity isn’t *a* strength, Steve King. It is our greatest strength. It gives us an advantage over other countries.

No, American ideals of freedom and equality are our strength. It’s too bad you don’t believe these ideals are powerful enough to win. You don’t believe in America.

Also the idea of “assimilating to US (read white) culture” is why we have peas in guacamole and skyline chili. Fuck that

We’ve also heard this kind of thing before from King. Earlier this year, he tweeted this little gem in support of a white nationalist named Geert Wilders and the drive to make America white again:

Wilders understands that culture and demographics are our destiny. We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.

That tweet earned the approval of no less than KKK grand wizard David Duke, so apparently that’s Steve King’s “base.”
