This Woman Just Solved The Mystery Of Where Missing Socks Go When You Wash Them

It’s a mystery we’ve all encountered countless times throughout our lives: The Missing Sock. You’ve certainly heard of this enigma, wherein you do your laundry, take it out of the dryer to fold, and discover that one (or two, or all) of your socks is missing its mate.

You check the washer, the dryer, all the areas surrounding each of them. You check your dog’s stash spot, your laundry hamper. You consider the fact that you may be losing your mind. I’m here to tell you, dear reader, that you are perfectly sane, at least when it comes to sock logistics; they really do disappear, and your dryer is to blame.

A woman named Sarah Rose shared a picture of what actually happens to all those missing socks. Spoiler alert: THE DRYER HOARDS THEM.

“soooo I no longer feel like a crazy person for losing random socks…” she captioned her picture, which speaks a thousand socks if not words.

Sarah Rose wrote another tweet assuring the Internet that the machine did not belong to her but that she’d tracked down the owner, who claimed to have found a credit card among the sock debris.

Naturally, her tweet went viral, racking up over 73,000 likes and nearly 26,000 retweets in less than a weeks’ time. Needless to say, people related. Hard.

Here is a gif of the dryer’s appetite in action:

One man named Matthew Frederick– who has since officially changed his middle name to “Dryer Lint,” brought up the fact that the duct in the back of home dryers need to be regularly maintained, as they too are hungry for your gear.
