Three Tons Of Gold, Platinum, And Diamonds Spill Onto Russian Runway After Plane Door Breaks

While the phrase “Russian golden shower” has taken on an entirely new meaning, here’s one that was actually caught on tape and shared with world.

In a scene straight out of a James Bond movie, the door of a cargo plane carrying nine tons of gold, platinum, and diamonds swung open spilling precious metals and gems all over the runway.

According to the Associated Press:

An An-12 plane operated by the airline Nimbus took off for Krasnoyarsk carrying 9.3 tons of gold and other precious metals, according to a statement from the state Investigative Committee quoted by Tass. Damage to a door handle caused it to fly open and spill some of the metal.

Here’s a better shot of the runway:

Willing to volunteer to, uh, clean that up.

These appear to be the metal ingots wrapped for safe transit:

This video will give you a good idea of how heavy these things are:

In total, the plane lost over 3 tons of precious cargo. So far there’s no information on where all this loot was being hauled, but these guys are welcome to swing by my place!
