Melania Trump is one of the most inscrutable First Ladies we’ve had in quite some time. She’s seemed to step into the role reluctantly, preferring to stay in New York City while Barron finished school rather than rush to White House to start her ceremonial duties (not that we can blame her). She’s notoriously press shy and, unlike her predecessors, doesn’t do a lot of events. Her pet issue of fighting cyberbullying received a much-deserved mocking before it was discarded in favor of a broader “help children” initiative. We really don’t know what makes Melania tick, until she unintentionally let’s the mask slip as she did today.

Eagle-eyed Melania-watchers noticed an awkward little moment playing out while the Trumps prepared to host their first state dinner for President Macron of France:

I don’t know which is worse, the pathetic pinky-to-palm tickling or the fact that he just grabs her hand even though she’s clearly livid. Really makes your skin crawl.

It’s worth noting that none of today’s awkwardness was on display when Melania sat with President Obama at Barbara Bush’s funeral last weekend:

Maybe we’re all making too much of these moments and Melania is truly happy, I guess we’ll have to wait for her book to find out.
