‘Sex And The City’ Star Cynthia Nixon Just Announced She’s Running For Governor Of New York And People Are Here For It

Quick, which Sex and the City character are you? I’m basically a combination of the worst qualities of the four of them, but if you’re a total Miranda and you’re a voter in the state of New York, I’ve got some good news for you.

Cynthia Nixon has announced she’s officially challenging Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary to be governor of New York with a slick campaign ad:

In the video, Nixon talks about her deep love for the state of New York, where she’s lived all her life and the issues she’ll be championing in the upcoming primary.

“I was given chances I just don’t see for most of New York’s kids today,” Nixon says. “Our leaders are letting us down. We are now the most unequal state in the entire country, with both incredible wealth and extreme poverty.”

Nixon has been talked about as a possible liberal challenger to the more centrist Governor Cuomo for years, and Cuomo has been dismissive of the actor-turned-activist’s chances. Nixon met with Cuomo-antagonist and Nixon-ally New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio’s advisors and Cuomo’s reaction was “prickly” to say the least. According to Daily Beast,

“The day after NY1 broke the news Nixon had met with the mayor’s advisors, Cuomo scoffed that either de Blasio or Vladimir Putin had put her up to it, sneering on a conference call with reporters, ‘I’m hoping that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Billy Joel don’t get into the race because if it’s just about name recognition, that would really be a problem.’”

Contrary to vanity runs by other mostly politically aloof celebrities, Nixon’s seems rooted in actual passion. She’s been a liberal activist for years, promoting legalization of gay marriage, education reform, and calling for serious policies to fight economic inequality. She’s even been arrested for protesting against overcrowded, underfunded schools.

While education and economic inequality make up the bulk of Nixon’s issue set, she’s also promising to fix the New York City subway system, which has become a political football in the rivalry between DeBlasio and Cuomo, and New Yorkers are definitely here for that one:
