Mom Calls Up Gay Bar Asking For Advice After Her Son Came Out. They Delivered.

Sometimes you need advice, but you don’t know where to turn.

And if that sounds like a terrible, rejected lyric from the Cheers theme song, it’s because, in the case of one woman in Mississippi, a bar was the only place she thought to turn in her time of need.

A bartender named Kara Coley at a “mostly gay” bar in Mississippi shared the story of a hilarious, heartwarming, perfectly instructive phone call she had one evening in January with a concerned mother who didn’t know what to say when her son came out to her.

“Are you gay?” asked the woman over the phone.

“Yes ma’am,” responded Coley.

“What was the one thing you wanted from your parents when you came out?”

And now here’s the amazing advice Coley gave, that you could waste your whole life trying to put into words. Just call SIPPS next time you have a question, and hope that you get Kara Coley.

Lady: My son just came out to me and I don’t want to say anything that may mess him up in the head.

Me: Well I think that you should just make sure he knows that you love and accept, wait, do you accept it?

Lady: Well umm yes if that’s what he wants.

Me: You should definitely let him know that you love and accept him! I think everything will be ok from there!

Lady: okay well thank you

See? Sometimes, the bartender gives you a tip. Sorry. Really nice story, though. Look, Kara even got to thank the commenters for saying so many nice things:

Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name (the comments section).
