CNN Pundit Shutdown By Soledad O’Brien After Calling Trump ‘The Greatest Reality Show Ever’

RIP CNN pundit Christopher Michael “Chris” Cillizza, who yesterday evening was torn a new one by journalist Soledad O’Brien as well as the Twittersphere at large. You shan’t be missed.

The righteous vitriol directed at Cillizza resulted from an ‘analysis’ he wrote published by CNN yesterday, a truly remarkable piece titled “Donald Trump is producing the greatest reality show ever.” As the title suggests, Cillizza equates the last 14 months of instability and anarchy in the White House to reality television. It reads like an Onion piece, but it’s CNN.

In the column, Cillizza likens the constant resignations and firings within the Trump administration to “the rapidly rising and then collapsing fortunes” experienced by contestants on Survivor and The Bachelor. He compresses White House staffers into reality tv archetypes; chief of staff John Kelly as “The good guy/bad guy,” writing how “No one can get a read on what, exactly, Kelly’s motives are and whether he is benign or malignant.” Former communications director Anthony Scaramucci he describes as “a reality TV show hero/villain right out of central casting.”

He calls it all great reality television, with seemingly zero consideration for the fact that these Survivor-esque ‘plot twists’ are in fact a very scary reality in which balance the literal lives of Americans. John Kelly was anti women-in-combat and pro Trump-wall. Scaramucci deleted all his old tweets advocating for gun-control when he entered the White House.

Cillizza also makes an an inexplicable aside about Game of Thrones hinging on Ned Stark’s unexpected demise in the season 1 finale, which is decidedly not reality television.

Soledad O’Brien went in on Cillizza’s parochial and bungled hot take:

O’Brien legitimately tries to imbue Cillizza with a modicum of self-awareness:

But he’s not having it.

Cillizza calls O’Brien’s critique ‘subjective,’ so she goes in for the kill:

Ouch!

Needless to say, there were reactions to O’Brien’s savagery.

People on Twitter quickly jumped on Cillizza for his offensive, borderline delusionary Trump take:

And generally just roasted the everloving bejeezus out of him:

People were legitimately pissed at CNN, having long ago accepted Cillizza as a shameless hack:

And many pointed out the fact that this is not a reality tv show, THIS IS REAL LIFE:

The rest of us are over here wondering whether or not Cillizza thinks GoT is a reality TV show.

When can we vote Cillizza off the island?
